Living From The Heart

I'm currently preparing and raising funds for my trip to India this September/October. When thinking of traveling to India, I was inspired to write the following article:

Human beings are a strange and wonderful lot. Filled with a plethora of emotions ranging from the sublime to the outrageous, from the divine to the dark and raging. Yet, in the heart of each human being lives the longing to connect, to be a part of something greater than just oneself. The world is full of examples of this struggle between the human heart, seeking connection and the human mind, seeking justification. However, what stands out in the history of humanity are the stories of those who listened to their hearts and transcended the mind’s desires for justification and “justice”. Those who choose connection over self-gratification have become the icons of what humanity can become. Maybe a better way of saying this would be to say they show us what it means to be truly human. For those still caught up in mind justification and self-gratification, there is always the hope that someday there will dawn an understanding of what it really means to be human, to open up one’s heart and connect with others.

Life gives us ample opportunity to practice this heart-centered way of living. We live in a world of opposites. Up-down, right-left, inside-outside, right-wrong, and the list could go on and on. However, the real magic happens when opposites come together and create a new synergy. An obvious example of this synergy would be the creation of new life when the opposites of man and woman come together. This is a magical state resulting from the cooperative blending of opposites! However, this same magical synergy can be created when other opposites come together; for example, those that “have” and those that “have not”. When people from opposite life situations come together in a heart-centered focus, a magical win-win situation can be created, not so unlike the creation of a new life. In this situation, the existing lives are changed at the most fundamental core of their beings. Something mysterious and magical happens that elevates all of those involved into a new perception of life and all its wondrous possibilities. Participating in the Whole Foods Volunteer Program facilitates the creation of an environment for such synergistic magic to flourish. All that is required is people…people willing to find that heart-space within so they can give of themselves to others that need what they have to offer. This creates an environment of miracles and no one comes out unchanged by that level of unconditional love. Simply put, it’s magical!

Ghandi said, “If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. ... We need not wait to see what others do.”

Change requires action. Action is a neutral energy that’s outcome is defined by the intentions of the actor. Humanity can chose to stay in its head and create more pollution, war, and destruction, or humanity can chose the path of the heart that connects us through our humanity so that we “get it” - that we are all one people…that I am my brother’s keeper. Love is a very active verb. When one acts out of love and compassion, the mind falls into its rightful place as the servant of the heart and not only does the individual change, changes begin to happen in the world.
